A Whimsical Kitchen Transformation: Designing With Personality at the Center

Every kitchen renovation tells a story.

For Project Fairywood, we started in a space that felt frozen in time: a dark, dated kitchen straight out of the 1970s. The cabinetry felt heavy, the finishes absorbed light instead of reflecting it, and the overall layout made the room feel smaller than it actually was. The homeowner had something very different in mind. She wanted a kitchen that felt playful, colorful, and just a little bit quirky, a space that reflected her personality instead of hiding it.

The before photos clearly illustrate the dark, cluttered conditions before Abode Above got our hands on this space!

That vision became the guiding principle for the entire design.

Rather than chasing trends or trying to create something overly polished, the goal was to design a kitchen that felt joyful and expressive while still functioning beautifully day to day. We began by lightening the overall visual weight of the room. Upper cabinets were finished in crisp white to bounce natural light throughout the space, while warm wood lower cabinets added grounding and character. This balance immediately helped the kitchen feel brighter and visually larger.

From there, color took center stage.

A saturated teal wall anchors the room and sets the tone for the entire color story. Instead of playing it safe with neutrals, we leaned into the client’s love of bold choices. The glossy backsplash tile introduces subtle texture while maintaining that rich color palette. On the floor, a whimsical patterned tile creates movement and personality. The pattern draws the eye across the room, making the space feel more expansive while adding a layer of playful design that perfectly suits the homeowner’s style.

Of course, every renovation comes with its share of unexpected moments.

One of the earliest hiccups involved the refrigerator. The initial appliance selected turned out to be the wrong size once installation began, which meant a last-minute pivot to ensure the kitchen layout still worked seamlessly. These moments are part of the reality of renovation projects, and flexibility is often the key to keeping things moving forward without compromising the overall design.

The tile delivery brought another surprise. When the floor tile arrived from the supplier, nearly 30 percent of the pieces were broken during shipping. Normally, that kind of damage can delay a project significantly. Instead of letting it stall the installation timeline, the contractor and installation team got creative. The broken pieces were used strategically beneath the base cabinets and in areas that would never be visible. This allowed the intact tiles to be reserved for the exposed floor areas, ensuring the final installation looked flawless while minimizing material waste.

Sometimes the best design solutions come from adapting to the unexpected.

Throughout the project, the most important design reference point was always the homeowner herself. Her personality is vibrant, playful, and a little unconventional — so the kitchen needed to reflect that. From the saturated color palette to the bold floor pattern and layered textures, every design choice was made with her sense of whimsy in mind.

When the final styling pieces were placed and the kitchen was complete, the result was exactly what we had hoped for: a space that feels bigger, brighter, and completely full of life.

The client’s reaction made it all worthwhile. She walked into the finished kitchen and immediately lit up. The colors, the patterns, the personality of the space; it all felt unmistakably hers.

That’s the real goal of great design. Not just creating a beautiful room, but creating a space that makes someone genuinely happy to be home.
